Lake Elmenite is an equatorial body of water that does not have a runoff. The only river flowing into it is Meroroni. It is part of the system of lakes in the Great Rift Valley. In 2011, the territory of the Elmenite National Park is included in the list of World Heritage sites.
This national park is of great historical value. In 1927-1928, a team of archaeologists under the guidance of the British anthropologist Luis Leakey near Lake Elmenite excavated. At this time, the remains of ancient people and some objects of their time were found. Almost all artifacts are found in a cave called Gembl near the lake. This was unlikely to be an ordinary grave, since the skeletons were not evenly laid out, as in a ritual burial. All the bones were in a crooked condition, and were strewn with a thick layer of ocher. Studies have shown that the people living here had an Ancient Ethiopian anthropological type. Next to the remains are found flint remnants of tools and ceramic pieces of household items. After studying the composition of the soil, remains and other finds, scientists attributed them to the Neolithic Age.

Lake Elmentate is located slightly south of the Ebururu volcano. The climate in this area is arid and precipitation is not frequent here. The lake slowly dries up between the rainy seasons. So the water in the pond is salty and the fish are not found here. However, blue-green algae attract many birds, among them pelicans and flamingos. they do not just fly here in search of food, birds nest in this area and even bring out chicks.
