About 350 km separates the National Park "Udzungwa Mountains National Park" from the nature reserve "Selous". It lies on the slopes of the Udzungwa Mountains, the highest point of which is Mount Lohomero. The park was founded in 1992 and covers an area of 1,990 square kilometers. Features and attractions "Udzungwa Mountains" The main feature of the national park is the lack of roads. Pedestrian tourist routes are laid in the park. There are only 7 of them and they all have a different degree of complexity - for tourists with different physical abilities, trained and beginners. One of the routes, 5 kilometers long, leads to the main attraction of the park - the beautiful waterfall of Sanj. It amazes with its greatness: from a huge height, cutting the dark green of the forest, silvery crystal, streams glittering in the sun, fall down, creating a powerful rumble that drowns out the thick cushion of surrounding greenery. From its lower cascade the water rushes directly into the forest. There is always a light mist here. Another unique feature of the park is about 30-40% of endemic plants. Interestingly, in the 90s of the last century new species of plants unknown to Europeans were discovered. The vegetable world of Udzungwa Due to the mild wet climate and rich soil, there are more than 3300 varieties of unique plants growing here, with more than 600 species of trees. The most interesting of them is African sterility. This tree has absolutely no lateral branches up to a height of 15-20 m. The height of the mahogany growing here reaches 60 meters. There are also fig trees with large trunks, and growing to a height of 30 m. There are plum trees, the fruits of which like elephants. Because of the large number of endemics, this park is sometimes called the "African Galapagos". Animal world The jungle attracts many species of animals. In dense forests, primates live. For example, the red colibus of Iringa, the Ugzungwa galaxy, the Sangye mangabey, also called the black-nosed monkey, can be found only in this locality. Of the 193 species of chameleons that live throughout the world - Trioceras laterispinis can only be found here. In the forests you can find a unique poisonous butterfly of the genus Pseudacraea, which is one of the brightest representatives of this genus. Among the large fauna representatives in the Udzungwa Park you can see bushboks, bush pigs, antelope jumpers, various types of dukers, antelope suni, puku and the very rare dunker of Tanzanian endemics. Representatives of the feathered world are also unique. Of the more than 290 different species of birds, many are endangered. Partridge uzungwassa, white-winged apalis is rare even in the Udzungwa park. And the voices of the silver-winged kalao and the crested guinea hen will awaken you with the first rays of the sun. It is worth at least once in my life to see this extraordinary beauty of wild nature with my own eyes.
