One of the unique pearls of African nature is Lake Natron. Call it the sinister phenomenon of Africa. Any animal that enters these terrible waters turns into stone. The water temperature in this lake sometimes reaches 60 degrees Celsius, the water pH is 9-10.5. The basin of Lake Natron is protected by the international Ramsar Convention. The lake is included in the World Wildlife Fund. The fifth circle of hell is the magnificent Natron In the northern part of Tanzania is the salt and alkaline Lake Natron. At an altitude of about 800 m above sea level, a beautiful pond covered with a thick crust of pink and red salt is spread over a length of 57 km and a width of 22 km. The color of the lake gives the results of vital activity of microorganisms. Its saturation varies depending on the mineralization and season of the year. The largest depth is 3 m, the average depth is 1.5 m. Photographer Nick Brandt, traveling through Africa, discovered the remains of petrified birds and bats, which allowed him, after mounting the exposition, to present the world with "photos from hell." Thus was discovered the ability of Lake Natron to kill by touching his waters all living things. Any living organism, getting into deadly waters, instantly perishes in a hot soup of minerals. And his body turns into stone. The name of its lake is derived from the name of the mineral, which is dissolved in its waters - sodium. Animal world of the lake In such terrible natural conditions, there is still life in the lake. There are several species of animals. Among them, endemic fish. It is called "alkaline calf". Also on the lake live small flamingos. Lake Natron is one of the few places of their nesting. 75% of these birds hatch their chicks here. The population of small flamingos is not numerous. And the lake protects birds from predators by their waters from natural enemies during the mating season, thereby enabling them to multiply. Their nests are small flamingos on islands of salt that protrude from the water and, in order to reach them, predators need to enter into the poisonous water for them, which entails death and becoming a stone. Fantastic beauty landscapes, as if pictures from another planet. Red salt on the surface, yellow rocks around, a pink wiggling tangle of millions of small flamingos is a truly fascinating and spectacular sight for ecotourists.
